But she has finally learned the truth: Brigitta is the lost princess of the kingdom of Tourin. She was sent into hiding as an infant to escape the wrath of her half-brother, the king. And now he knows just where to find her. Rupert is a notorious pirate and sorcerer who can harness the wind with his hands. He's spent most of his life plotting revenge on the evil king-and Rupert believes that Brigitta could be the key to finally destroying his enemy. But what begins as a kidnapping of the innocent beauty escalates into something deeper, and more passionate, than either captor or captive could have imagined. Rupert soon vows to protect Brigitta against the king-but will they survive long enough to find their happily-ever-after...Or does fate have something else in store?

The second in Sparks’s Embraced fantasy romance series (following How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days) is a lively tale of pirates, intrigue, sorcery, and lost heirs. Brigitta, raised in secret on the Isle of the Moon to protect her from her evil half-brother, is the missing princess of Tourin and one of the magic-wielding Embraced, a trait that could earn a death sentence in many places. King Gunther of Tourin, her half-brother, has found her, but before he can capture her, Brigitta is kidnapped by the notorious pirate Rupert, an Embraced with the ability to control winds. Rupert has his own ax to grind with Gunther; at first he views Brigitta as a useful pawn, but their mutual distrust slowly turns into empathy and then love. Before they can build a life together, Rupert will need to foil Gunther’s nefarious plot to expand his political power. Despite some awkward plot tangents, the story charges along at a rapid pace, and Sparks’s characters are witty and full of life. Her latest should satisfy historical romance fans who are ready for a little magic. Agent: Michelle Grajkowski, Three Seas Literary.

The lackluster performance of narrator Jill Tanner fails to breathe life into this fantasy romance novel. Characters are seldom distinguishable, regardless of their gender or age. The pacing of the narration is often slow, not as a stylistic choice to increase the drama but simply as a quirk of the storytelling. Both of these characteristics distract rather than engage the listener. Characters whose accents are described in the text as lilting instead sound whiny and grating, rendering them unlikable. Furthermore, Tanner's bland narration serves to highlight the author's overuse of certain words and phrases (for example, "grimace"--and "special gift"). Overall, this is a weak production.
