Hot Start, the fifth volume in the Cordell Logan series, is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride filled with plenty of unexpected twists and full-throttle action.

A notorious, international big-game hunter and his beautiful, former dental hygienist wife are gunned down at long range late one sweltering summer night, while swimming naked on their seaside estate in opulent Rancho Bonita, California. Police investigators are convinced that the killer is a strident, outspoken animal-rights activist with both military experience and a criminal record. The evidence against him would appear overwhelming—until rumors begin to surface that others may have had their own reasons for committing murder.

The last thing flight instructor, aspiring Buddhist, and ex–government assassin Cordell Logan wants to do is become involved in the investigation. He and the accused, however, have mutual friends. Reluctant at first, Logan finds himself caught up in an increasingly confounding enigma, one that swirls around a popular congressman with close ties to the White House, a European call girl ring, and a ruthless Czech crime boss who'll stop at nothing to protect his interests. Pursuing the truth will take Logan to places few others would dare go, exposing him to dangers that even he may not survive.

Flight instructor Cordell Logan is once again drawn into the high-stakes activities of his former life as an assassin, in this fifth installment of the snappy whodunit series. Ray Porter's conversational style of narration beautifully portrays Logan's cheeky humor and first-person introspection. Logan is asked to investigate the murder of a wealthy big-game hunter and his wife because the animal rights activist who has been arrested for the crime is a distant family connection to Logan. The bullets start to fly when he stumbles into a complex web involving a congressman and a European crime syndicate. Porter voices each character distinctly and depicts female characters particularly well. The Czech prostitute seems just as charming as Logan's delightfully peculiar landlady. A double murder propels Logan’s well-paced, action-filled fifth mystery featuring flight instructor and former government assassin Cordell Logan (after 2015’s The Three-Nine Line). Late one night, big-game hunt guru Roy Hollister and his wife take a swim in the Africa-shaped pool on their estate in Rancho Bonita, Calif. The next morning, a gardener finds their bodies in the pool, each shot with large-caliber rifle bullets of a type used to fell elephants. When the police arrest animal-rights activist Dino Birch for the crime, Logan’s former father-in-law asks him to find out whether Birch is innocent. Logan discovers that Hollister, whose safari-chartering service took a hit in the 2008 financial crash, was using his aircraft to ferry high-priced European prostitutes to cities such as New York and Washington, D.C. Law enforcement took note, and Hollister was about to name names before a federal grand jury. Logan deals smoothly with thugs, prostitutes, politicians, and other lowlifes with only occasional stumbles en route to the satisfying conclusion. Agent: Jill Marr, Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.
